Day 3: Metal & Pottery
After breakfast at your accommodations you'll be lead into the Medina once again for more hands on learning.
The day starts as you arrive at the metal workers souk. There's a feel and a sound to the metal workers souk that seems to move though you when you hear it. The large pieces being hammered and formed provide the baseline, while the fine tapping of the chisels as they carve the metal sing the melody. In an age where soulless machines produce uninteresting, uniform, and utilitarian items, it's electrifying to see that the hand of an artisan can make the everyday items into so much more.
After lunch get ready for messy afternoon as you head to the pottery cooperative. You'll follow the entire process of Moroccan pottery from simple clay to finished mosaic. Starting the process with softening and working the clay for tiles and for the potters wheel. Then to the wheel for a crash course on the art of the tangine pot.
Next you'll paint the intricate traditional designs
before putting the pots into the kiln and feeding the fire. Finally sit
besides artisans and hand chip the tiles before laying them into the
mosaics.
