Day 2: Woodworking & Weaving
After breakfast at your accommodations, you'll be head back into the souks for a morning with the wood workers. Unlike the day before with the leather, the wood comes ready to work and won't involve large vats, dyes, and unique smells. Instead the air is filled with the aroma of cedar, pine, and olive wood. Working at the side of a craftsman you'll spend the morning cutting, joining, turning, carving, and painting. From blank pieces of wood will come objects of art and artistry. Then a break for lunch before starting on the next craft.
Moroccan
fashions come to life from a mixture of design and fabric. Hand spun and
hand dyed silk and cotton alone are of little interest. But with a wood
loom the threads are mixed and woven into glistening fabrics of
intricate design. There's something more meaningful to a piece of cloth
when you know what was involved in its making, and even more meaning
when you've made it yourself. You'll spend the afternoon first learning
how to work the wooden looms, then try your hand at weaving.
