Day 1: Depart the USA

JFK"The longest journey starts with the first step."  But today it starts with a quick check of your documents.  Your tickets with Royal Air Maroc are electronic, your tour is already booked, so the only document you'll really need is your passport.  American citizens do not need a visa to enter Morocco, but do need a US passport valid for at least another six months.

If you're taking the tour with air included*, then your trip begins at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), "Where America Greets the World."  A massive, sprawling airport, JFK is surprisingly easy to get around.  From whatever terminal you arrive at, hop on Kennedy Airport's new elevated light Terminal onerail system "AirTrainJFK." You'll be heading to Terminal One and the Royal Air Maroc ticket counter.  Make every effort to be there for check-in at least 3 hours before departure.

Once you have your boarding pass, head to the TSA security checkpoint, unless you're hungry.  The food court at Terminal One is located on the second floor outside of security.  Security Do's and Don'ts seem to change almost daily, so visit the TSA website to check on the most recent procedures. Remember, be patient and polite, TSA's officers are there all day, but you have only one flight to catch.  Once past security you'll board the Royal Air Maroc plane for your overnight flight direct from New York to Casablanca, which takes about 7 hours.

Enjoy the view as the sun sets over North America, the next time you see the sunrise, it'll be over Africa.

*Ground only tour starts in Fez and ends in Ouarzazate, or (for an additional fee) can start in Casablanca and/or end in Marrakech with no flights included.
